Bikepacking Slovenia

“‘Slovenia, where is that?’ was the most common thing people said when we talked about this little country sandwiched between Italy, Austria, Hungary and Croatia. Part of the former Yugoslavia, Slovenia declared independence in 1991 – a country younger than most people asking the question. It had been at the top of my ‘to visit’ list after reading George Monbiot’s Feral which describes the country’s incredible recovery from sparse scrubland to dense and biodiverse forest. Sold on the descriptions of flora-filled alpine meadows, flowing turquoise rivers and vast Karst caves, I decided we needed to explore this hidden gem by bike.”

Earlier in the summer British riders Jess Duffy and Josh Greet headed to Slovenia for a week of unsupported gravel riding and exploring.

Plotting a circular journey beginning and ending in the country’s capital Ljubljana, the pair’s route was almost entirely off-road as it took in landmarks including Lake Bled, the cobbles of the Vršič Pass, the Soča Valley, and the Postojna Caves.
